The Morant Point Lighthouse, an unmistakable red and white, 100-foot tall, 18-foot wide cast-iron tower, was built in 1841. It is the oldest lighthouse in Jamaica, and certainly one of the more sturdy; located on the farthest tip of the island’s east coast, the first point of impact from hurricanes, it has withstood the brute force of gale-force winds and high seas. Kru men, West African workers who came to the island as indentured labourers from Sierra Leone, built the lighthouse. > Learn More
At the close of the 19th century, Port Antonio burst onto the international stage as the banana capital of the world. The boats that came to collect the “green gold” also brought hundreds of visitors to the scenic port. Quickly, the town became a revered vacation spot for the world’s rich and famous and a haven for wealthy merchants, many of who built “winter homes” throughout the town. Although the banana trade waned in the early decades of the new century, this charming town was soon rediscovered and glamorised by the Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 50s. Still frequented by movie stars and visitors looking for a quiet escape, Port Antonio of today is a low-key, peaceful spot, cradled by nature’s profuse beauty. In and around the town centre elegant old buildings beckon, silently reminding us of the town’s celebrated history, while new developments promise to re-position “Portie” in the limelight once more.  > Learn More

Did you know?

Old Woman Savanna: In Clarendon, running roughly from Kellits to Crofts Hill there is an area known as Old Woman's Savanna. It appeared so on earliest maps and apparently the old woman was a Spaniard -who refused to leave Jamaica when the English captured the island in 1655, even though her house and property in Spanish Town were seized. She received permission to retire to her hato in the country thus giving the name to the area
